Gerishna: Abdollah Khorshidi, A nuclear researcher from Gerash, complementarily offered his article about employing nuclear technology in treating cancerous tumors to the charitable people of Gerash.
Khorshidi, Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering specialized in Medical Radiation, is a nuclear researcher who teaches in several universities and works with a number of organizations, including Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. The article, titled “Evaluation of a Proposed Biodegradable ۱۸۸Re Source for Brachytherapy Application: A Review of Dosimetric Parameters”, is published in the American journal Medicine, which is an ISI journal, also indexed in Pubmed, in July 2015. This is the acknowledgment in the footnote of the article: “Here is our thankfully acknowledge the spiritual and financial maintenance from Gerashian peoples who have constructed and supplied the Gerash University of Medical and Paramedical Sciences, Amir-Al-Momenin Hospital, Medical Laboratories, Home residence and requirements in Fars province by Gerashian charitable peoples […], Gerash charity institution and social support with low governmental provision rate in regional public welfare and health promotion.”
In an interview with Gerishna, Dr. Khorshidi tried to simplify the subject of his study: “One way of treating cancerous tumors is implanting a seed, currently a radioactive seed of Iodine or Palladium, in the tumor. We suggested that we can instead use ۱۸۸Re seed for internal radiotherapy applications. We have also suggested a biodegradable glass for the seed which eliminates the need for another surgery to remove it after.”
Dr. Khorshidi’s suggestion to the managers of Gerash Hospital is also mind provoking. He believes that this hospital has enough diagnostic facilities now, and should turn toward treatment of diseases, especially cancer which is not uncommon in the region.
